How much do you need your stimulus money? Could you pay it forward? Something to consider if you are able: Give it to a family in your community that is struggling to feed their children and pay their rent. This is something I’ve been thinking about for some time now. My husband and I are fortunate enough to have businesses that, while the challenges have been steep, are surviving and providing us with income that pays our monthly bills and feeds us well. Could I use that check to splurge on some clothes or treat myself to a trip in the future? Sure. But when so many right here where I live have lost their job or are staying home because their kids are schooling at home. When so many parents are laying awake wondering how they will pay the rent, or buy new snow boots for their kids, or pay for groceries next week, I decided I want to do something really meaningful with my stimulus check. Something that would put money directly in the hands of a parent who needs it just to survive the winter. I reached out to a teacher I know and he told me about Portland’s Families in Crisis Fund. A fund that helps the School District assist families with emergency needs. With the pandemic, this need has increased for the Portland School District's most vulnerable children and their families.
This fund allows school social workers and parent community specialists to help families directly with basic needs other than food. The Families in Crisis Fund can be used to help Portland families who are experiencing unemployment or have been directly impacted by COVID-19 with one time payments of rent, utilities, medical costs, transportation, or employment related costs or supplies.

I hope you are inspired by this idea. This is just one of many ways that those of us who are able to do so can stimulate the economy while helping out a family that is struggling to make it through this hard time.
